DEFINITELY NOT BORING Review of Shopify Winter Editions 2025: What it means for merchants and agencies?

Alex Rodukov
Alex Rodukov
CEO & eCom Strategist

Shopify’s Winter Editions 2025 are here, and let me tell you—this is no ordinary update. As an eCommerce expert who’s been knee-deep in eCommerce strategy and working closely with merchants at Fourmeta, I can honestly say these new features are exactly what we need to keep up with the fast-paced world of online retail. Whether you're a merchant looking to elevate your customer experience or an agency looking to offer top-tier services, Shopify has packed this update with features that will not only streamline operations but also bring a level of flexibility and customization we've all been waiting for.

Let’s break it down from both a merchant and agency perspective. And fair warning, you’re going to see a bit of my opinion here because—let’s face it—Shopify’s done something really exciting, and I want to share why I think these changes matter.

Top updates that will impact merchants and agencies

1. Draft Orders with Functions, Bundles, and Checkout Extensions: The Magic Is in the Details

What it means for merchants:
For merchants, this is a huge win. Now, you can create draft orders with more flexibility than ever before, including bundling products, applying specific functions, and customizing the checkout process. It’s like having a powerful toolkit that allows you to really fine-tune the customer journey and ensure consistency even for complex product offerings.

What it means for agencies:
For us agencies, this is a game-changer. Draft orders are now more customizable and will work seamlessly with extensions and functions. We can offer our clients personalized solutions, tailored to their specific business rules, and have it all integrated without the headache of manual workarounds. We can help merchants deliver a truly seamless experience from cart to checkout, reducing the risk of abandoned carts and improving conversion rates.

My opinion:
Honestly, I’m all in on this update. It simplifies some of the more complex workflows, and for us marketers, it means being able to align the shopping experience with the customer’s expectations more easily. If I’m a merchant, I’m seriously excited about this one.

2. Shopify POS: Now with Bundles, Customer Segments, and Metafields

What it means for merchants:
Shopify POS just got a major upgrade with the ability to work with product bundles, retail customer segments, and customer metafields. If you’re a retail store owner, this means your in-person sales just got as sophisticated as your online store. Think personalized offers based on customer preferences and an intuitive checkout experience for your in-store shoppers.

What it means for agencies:
For agencies, this is an excellent opportunity to help clients bridge the gap between their online and offline experiences. We can now create omnichannel marketing campaigns that tie in customer data from both online and physical stores, allowing us to offer more targeted solutions. With customer metafields and segments, the level of personalization we can provide in marketing campaigns is unprecedented.

My opinion:
As someone who’s seen firsthand how powerful personalized experiences can be, I’m super excited by this. For years, merchants have been stuck with disconnected systems for in-store and online data. This update makes it possible to truly unify those experiences, and I think it’s going to have a big impact on customer loyalty.

3. Supercharged Search & Discovery: More Customization, Better Experience

What it means for merchants:
The updates to Shopify Search & Discovery mean that your product listings can now be combined and customized in search results. Whether you want to show just the parent product or include child products as well, you now have full control. This is huge for improving how products are discovered and how shoppers interact with your listings.

What it means for agencies:
For agencies, this update gives us the ability to create more refined search strategies. We can set up smart collections based on things like material or color, which makes the site easier to navigate and more aligned with what customers want. I’m especially excited about the category metafields, which allow us to make filtering even more intuitive.

My opinion:
Here’s the thing: if you’ve ever spent time trying to navigate a poorly optimized search system, you know how painful it can be. Shopify’s push to make search and product discovery smarter is a massive step forward. The more relevant products are, the better the overall shopping experience—and that directly impacts conversion.

4. Faster, Smoother Cart and Checkout: Speed = Sales

What it means for merchants:
Shopify is not just about making things look good; it's about making them work faster. With up to 50% faster cart loading times and more responsive checkout experiences, customers can now check out quicker and with fewer interruptions. This isn’t just a performance update; it's one that directly boosts your sales by reducing cart abandonment.

What it means for agencies:
For us, this means less frustration for our clients. Faster load times mean better customer satisfaction, which means better retention and more sales. As agencies, we’ll be able to provide more data-driven insights on how changes, such as page speed optimisation, impact the bottom line, helping our clients optimize and refine their stores even more effectively.

My opinion:
I can’t stress this enough—speed is everything. How many times have you abandoned a checkout because the page was loading too slowly? Shopify’s commitment to improving speed across the board is not just smart—it’s essential. We all know that even a fraction of a second can make or break a sale.

5. Customer Account Extensions: Personalization at Its Best

What it means for merchants:
Merchants now have the ability to personalize customer accounts directly in the admin, without needing to code. This means offering things like subscription management, loyalty programs, or even personalized recommendations directly from the customer’s account page. It’s all about creating a more engaged and loyal customer base.

What it means for agencies:
For agencies, this feature opens up new ways to help clients boost their customer retention. Personalized customer accounts mean that we can create experiences tailored specifically to the needs of each shopper. Whether it's offering tailored discounts, easy subscription management, or personalized product recommendations, the opportunities are endless.

My opinion:
I’m a huge fan of any feature that allows for more personalization. If you ask me, Shopify’s ability to make every touchpoint with the customer more personalized is a game-changer. If you’re not investing in personalization, you’re missing out on one of the most powerful ways to build brand loyalty.

6. Global Expansion: Shopify Takes You Worldwide

What it means for merchants:
Selling globally just got easier with Shopify’s international updates. From VAT invoicing to global shipping labels, Shopify is streamlining international sales for merchants. If you're thinking of expanding beyond borders, these updates remove a lot of the complexity around international commerce.

What it means for agencies:
As agencies, this is a massive opportunity to help our clients scale. The ability to manage international orders, taxes, and currencies all in one platform is a dream. We can now offer strategies tailored to specific markets, ensuring our clients can grow in multiple regions without the operational headache.

My opinion:
Global sales are the future of eCommerce. I love that Shopify is making it easier for merchants to reach international customers and that they're handling the heavy lifting on the backend. For agencies, this opens up so many doors to help clients grow on a global scale.

Conclusion: Shopify Winter Editions 2025 are a game-changer for merchants and agencies

These updates aren’t just about adding new features—they’re about creating more personalized, faster, and smarter experiences for both customers and merchants. Whether you’re a merchant looking to streamline your operations or an agency trying to offer innovative solutions, Shopify Winter Editions 2025 has something for you.

As I see it, the future of eCommerce is about creating seamless, integrated experiences. Shopify’s latest updates show they’re taking that vision to heart, and I, for one, couldn’t be more excited about what’s coming next.
